چکیده

The initial stages of fault development have been recognized in laboratory experiments, but not at seismogenic depths. To fully understand how faults initially develop and begin to evolve, one needs to first recognize and then observe the emerging structure. Recognizing the birth of a fault requires a priori knowledge of the regional tectonics, geologic structure, and seismic history. This information is needed to assess the likelihood

Was the Mw 7.5 1952 Kern County, California, earthquake induced (or triggered)?

Several recent studies have presented evidence that significant induced earthquakes occurred in a number of oil-producing regions during the early and mid-twentieth century related to either production or wastewater injection. We consider whether the 21 July 1952 Mw 7.5 Kern County earthquake might have been induced by production in the Wheeler Ridge oil field. The mainshock, which was not prec...

Earthquake Monitoring in Southern California for Seventy-Seven Years (1932–2008)

The Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN) has produced the SCSN earthquake catalog from 1932 to the present, a period of more than 77 yrs. This catalog consists of phase picks, hypocenters, and magnitudes. We present the history of the SCSN and the evolution of the catalog, to facilitate user understanding of its limitations and strengths. Hypocenters and magnitudes have improved in qualit...

A Strong Ground Motion Catalogue of Selected Records for Shallow Crustal, Near Field Earthquakes in Iran

Understanding strong ground motions in the near-fault areas is important for seismic risk assessment in densely populated areas. In the past, lack of information on strong ground motion for large and moderate earthquakes led to the use of mainly far field large and moderate earthquake records in equations for calculation of the strong ground motion parameters. In this article, we collected and ...

Paleoseismic and Slip-Rate Observations along the Honey Lake Fault Zone, Northeastern California, USA

The Honey Lake fault is a major strike-slip fault in northeastern California that accommodates northwest-directed right-lateral shear in the northern Walker Lane. We reexamine the fault’s paleoseismic history and slip rate by evaluating a natural stream bank exposure of the fault and offset terrace riser. Structural and stratigraphic relations within the modern stream cut, radiocarbon ages, and...
